Stonehenge Wiltshire England Holiday

Stonehenge, Wiltshire, England:

StonehengeStonehengeHow and why this circular monument of massive rocks was created between 3,000 and 1,600 B.C. is unknown, but some experts say the stones were aligned as part of a sun-worshipping culture or astronomical calendar. Recently scientists have determined that the structure also served as a burial ground.

Rheinfalls and Stein Am Rhein Switzerland

Rheinfalls and Stein Am Rhein Switzerland

can be combined to make a Switzerland pleasant excursion from Zurich. The Rheinfalls are the largest water falls in Europe. While there are bigger and more impressive water falls in the world, what is unique is how close you actually get to them. When you enter from the side near Schaffhausen Switzerland, you have the opportunity to get very close. There is a platform that is built just over the falls and you can feel the power of the water rushing just beneath you. Also, you will find an opening in the rocks that looks something like a cave with water on the floor. If you enter there, you will come out on a platform that is within a short reach of the falls and the roar of the water rushing by will fill your ears.

If you still have not had enough, you can take one of several boat excursions. One will deposit you on a rock which is in the middle of the falls and come back later to pick you up. Another will simply motor to the foot of the falls and then cut its engines and let the power of the rushing waters push it back away again. It is possible to get to the Rheinfalls by train, by traveling to Schloss Laufen. From there it is a 5-10 minute walk to the falls.

Macau made peninsula two islands

MACAU PENINSULA

Macau is small. That is an inescapable fact. Made up of a peninsula and two islands, the area covered by the territory is a mere 23.5 square kilometres. So do not blink or you might miss something!

Macau Peninsula

Historically, culturally and economically, the peninsula is where it is happening. Its central focus is the busy Largo do Senado. This very Mediterranean town square is surrounded by some of Macau’s most famous buildings, including the Leal Senado and the church of Sao Domingos.

Shopping is a key element of central city life. St. Dominic’s Market fills the alleyways off the Senate Square. Other roads leading off the square are full of shops selling everything from factory overruns to the latest designer gear. Gold shops by the dozen line the main thoroughfare running between the square and the Leal Senado.

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam

BRUNEI Darussalam

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, or Bandar as it’s known locally, is the capital of Brunei and the sultanate’s only settlement of any real size. Straddling the northern bank of a twist in the Sungei Brunei, the city is characterized by its unlikely juxtaposition of striking modern buildings (the latest and most impressive being the twin malls of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah shopping complex) and traditional stilt houses. These stilt houses make up the water village, or Kampung Ayer, Brunei’s original seat of power and still home to half the city’s population.

Indeed, as recently as the middle of the nineteenth century, Brunei’s capital was little more than a sleepy water village, but with the discovery of oil came its evolution into the attractive, clean and modern waterfront city of today. Large-scale urbanization took place north of the Sungei Brunei, resulting in housing schemes, shopping centres and, more obviously, the magnificent Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, which dominates the skyline of Bandar. First-time visitors are pleasantly surprised by a sense of space that’s rare in Southeast Asian cities. However, Bandar isn’t somewhere you’re likely to stay for long: most of its sights can be seen in a day or two.
